Subwoofers are made up of one or more woofers mounted in a loudspeaker enclosure, often made of wood with capabilities of withstanding air pressure while resisting deformation.

To build a truly personalized system, you will want to start by looking at component subs. A component sub is just the speaker on it's own, and usually ranges in size from 8 inches to 15 inches. The component sub speaker will need to be mounted in a subwoofer enclosure or box. Enclosure boxes are available pre-built and readily available from manufactures.
