Technology
Dynamic Motor Analysis - DMA Optimized Motor Summary: JL Audio's proprietary Dynamic Motor Analysis system is a powerful suite of FEA-based modeling systems, first developed by JL Audio in 1997 and refined over the years to scientifically address the issue of speaker motor linearity. This leads to vastly reduced distortion and faithfully reproduced transients... or put simply: tight, clean, articulate bass.
Detailed Information: Since 1997, JL Audio has been at the forefront of Finite Element Analysis-based modeling of loudspeaker motors and suspensions. This research is aimed at decoding what we refer to as the "Loudspeaker Genome"... a project aimed at understanding the true behavior of loudspeakers under power and in motion. A major component of this integrated system is DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis). Starting with the 15W3 and the W7 Subwoofers in the late 1990's and early 2000's, DMA has played an important role in the design of all JL Audio woofers sold today, including our component woofers.
DMA is a Finite Element Analysis (FEA)-based system, meaning that it takes a large, complex problem, breaks it down into small solution elements for analysis and then assembles the data to form an accurate, "big-picture" solution. DMA's breakthrough is that it actually considers the effects of power through the coil as well as coil/cone position within the framework of a time-domain analysis. This gives us a highly accurate model of a speaker's actual behavior under real power, something that the traditional Thiele-Small models or other low power measurements cannot do. Because DMA does not rely on a steady-state model, it is able to consider shifts in the circuit elements being analyzed. These modeling routines are intense, requiring hours to run for a whole speaker.
DMA is able to analyze the real effects of fluctuating power and excursion upon the magnetic circuit of the motor, specifically the dynamic variations of the "fixed" magnetic field. This delivers intensely valuable information compared to traditional modeling, which assumes that the "fixed" field produced in the air gap by the magnet and the motor plates is unchanging. DMA not only shows that this "fixed" field changes in reaction to the magnetic field created by current flowing through the voice coil, but it helps our engineers arrive at motor solutions that minimize this instability. Analyzing this behavior is critical to understanding the distortion mechanisms of a speaker motor and sheds light on the aspects of motor design that determine truly linear behavior:
Linear motor force over the speaker's operational excursion range
Consistent motor force with both positive and negative current through the coil
Consistent motor force at varying applied power levels
Our ability to fully analyze these aspects of motor behavior allows our transducer engineers to make critical adjustments to motor designs that result in extremely linear, highly stable dynamic loudspeaker motor systems.
The payoff is reduced distortion, improved transient performance and stellar sound quality.
Aluminum Dome Tweeter Summary: Lightweight Aluminum Dome tweeters deliver sparkling high-frequency detail that extends well beyond the frequency response of typical human hearing.
Detailed Information: Compared to similar textile designs, aluminum tweeter diaphragms offer superior stiffness and high-frequency extension, with only a minor penalty in efficiency. JL Audio’s aluminum dome tweeters employ a rubber surround and ferrous fluid in the motor gap to damp the aluminum diaphragm. This additional damping reduces ringing and improves the tweeter’s smoothness of reproduction while still delivering the high-frequency energy and extension that metal domes are known for.
JL Audio C7-350cm 3.5" Component Midrange with Grille - Single Midrange Speaker
C7 is the pinnacle of JL Audio automotive loudspeaker design, benefiting from our most advanced development tools and a complete commitment to precision manufacturing.
The C7-350cm component midrange is designed to operate in a 3-way system, with a woofer and tweeter. Conceived and purpose-built from the ground up, it offers exceptional transient response and outstanding linearity, resulting in unsurpassed clarity and natural mid-range reproduction. Distortion and non-linearities have been minimized through critical optimization of dynamic motor and suspension behaviors.
Passive crossover networks are not included with C7 drivers, as they are designed for active systems. Instead, we recommend a high-quality tuning DSP, such as the JL Audio TwK™ 88 or D8, and a dedicated amplifier channel for each C7 loudspeaker in the system. Precise setup of equalization, delay and crossover filters will ensure optimal in-vehicle performance.
C7-350cm Design Notes
Cone and Dust Cap Vacuum-formed, mineral-filled polypropylene material offers excellent damping and low mass. The cone body features a gentle curvilinear profile to optimize response. A concave dust cap further improves high frequency behavior.
Suspension Design The moving assembly is suspended and damped via a linear profile spider formed from a Nomex®/polycotton blend, and a positive-roll, rubber surround. The two combine to provide optimum damping without prematurely restricting excursion.
Motor Design The C7-350cm employs a high-density magnetic circuit with a high-grade, neodymium magnet, and a specially machined, U-Yoke motor topology. Motor magnetics have been precisely optimized utilizing advanced FEA tools to reduce distortion and provide linear motor force throughout the driver's performance range.
A 36 mm (1.42 inch) diameter, overhung voice coil is employed, wound with copper-clad aluminum wire onto a fiberglass voice coil former. The oversized voice coil offers extended power handling capability, minimizing thermal compression and distortion at higher listening levels.
Chassis Design A purpose-engineered cast alloy basket is employed, featuring thin spokes to maximize rear open area.

Elevated Frame Cooling (U.S. Patent #6,219,431 & #6,229,902) JL Audio's patented Elevated Frame Cooling design delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.
Detailed Information: Many speakers employ venting techniques to enhance voice coil cooling. This is typically accomplished by having big holes in the sides of the frame just below the spider attachment shelf. While it provides a modest cooling benefit, this low-velocity air-flow does not blow directly or strongly on the voice coil.
Our patented design improves upon this cooling technique in a number of ways. By elevating the frame above the top-plate of the motor (via stand-offs integrated into the bottom of the frame) a narrow, high-velocity air-path is created between the bottom surface of the frame and the top surface of the top-plate. This air path leads directly to the voice coil and then turns upward into the spider air cavity. By utilizing the pumping action of the spider through this focused air path, a large volume of cool air hits the coil windings directly.
Another important benefit is that the upper surface of the top-plate (one of the speaker's hottest parts) is directly exposed to cooling air flow, whereas on a conventional design it is isolated from the air flow by the lower flange of the frame. The elevated frame technology greatly increases thermal power handling, reduces compression effects and does so without any additional parts.

Utopia M 3.5 inch Midrange Speaker Driver Each
The design of this ultra-compact midrange speaker driver was made possible thanks to the exclusive use of our new ‘M'-profile 'W' sandwich cone, combined, amongst other things, with our TMD® surround and a red neodymium motor, Focal's signature. Our ears being particularly sensitive around 4kHz, this 3.5” midrange will surprise you with its extreme softness and striking realism.
The Best of Focal Technologies
'M'-profile 'W' sandwich cone The new, patented, ‘M'-profile cone is the result of many years of research and our expertise in materials and their geometry. The innovative ‘M’-profile, made from a single piece, means it is incredibly rigid and perfectly combines the three criteria essential for creating an “ideal” speaker driver: rigidity, lightness and damping. The result is an extremely linear frequency response, a low distortion rate and better sound dispersion.
Upon listening, this cone delivers striking realism and level of detail, that transports you into the heart of music.
TMD Surround Originally developed for the Sopra line of high-fidelity loudspeakers, our TMD® (Tuned Mass Damper) surround has a unique profile, designed to better control the effects of resonance and to drastically reduce the distortion associated with deformations of the cone. The speaker driver takes advantage of this patented technology by spreading better defined and very realistic midranges’ frequencies.
Progressive Spider The progressive spider used on all our Utopia drivers is built around a progressive section that reproduces all the impact of the bass whilst optimising the linearity, precision and dynamics of the sound.
An ‘À LA CARTE’ Concept Do you dream about building your own, bespoke, audio system, by choosing each speaker driver based on your vehicle and your requirements? With our new Utopia M line, this dream has now come true, with only one limit: your creativity.
Made In France and Unique Design Utopia M range is entirely designed, developed and manufactured in France, in our workshops in Saint-Etienne. A unique and internationally recognized expertise for nearly forty years. In addition to the new ‘M’-profile ‘W’ sandwich cone, our designers went to the extreme in developing a disruptive design. The design of the Utopia M chassis is a subtle mix of tradition, performance and elegance “à la française”.
Composed of two 6 1/2” (165mm) woofers and two TKME tweeters, the ES 165 KE kit is a compact, easy-to-install system. The speaker drivers’ K2 cones diffuse super dynamic, razor-sharp sound. Born from Focal’s expertise in all things acoustic, they combine the assets of lightness, rigidity and damping, all prerequisites of a good speaker driver.
The inverted dome TKME tweeters also feature an aramid fibre dome. Their exclusive ‘M’-shaped profile helps to improve control of cone deformation and to reproduce the high frequencies smoothly and accurately. The tweeters can be mounted in different ways: in the factory locations, flush or on angled brackets, for all-encompassing installation options.
The kit is supplied with aluminium grilles.
K2 Sandwich Cone
The aramid fibre cone inherits all of Focal’s unique know-how. Composed of an ultralight foam core, sandwiched between a thin layer of aramid fibre and a layer of fibreglass, it combines 3 key factors when it comes to acoustics: rigidity, lightness and damping, for sound that is as precise and dynamic as it can get.
TMD® Surround
The speaker drivers benefit from TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) technology, a patented innovation. This surround has a special profile, designed to better control the effect of resonance and reduce the distortion associated with deformations of the cone. The midranges are perfectly defined and very realistic.
TKME Tweeter
The ‘M’-profile TKME tweeter extends the frequency response to 22 kHz with an even greater reduction of distortion, for smooth and precise diffusion in the high treble. Coupled with a ‘push-pull’ motor, based on IAL2 technology, it achieves very low resonance frequencies for perfect harmonic balance.
More Linearity and Precision
The progressive spider on the K2 Power speaker drivers is built around a progressive section to reproduce all the impact of the bass and increase the linearity, precision and dynamics of the sound.
Increased SPL
The Radial VC cooling system for the speaker driver coil expels hot air from the coil towards the bottom of the motor through 6 holes. This improves control over the coil temperature, limiting the effects of heat compression and improving reliability. This improves the dynamics of the speaker driver and generates a powerful sound.
Optimised Crossovers
All the components used for the K2 Power crossovers have been specially selected and optimised to better control the effects of heat dissipation. These components are essential for managing the various channels and the soundstage reliably and efficiently.
Slim Profile
The ES 165 K2S and SUB 25 KXS kits have a shallow depth. This slim profile takes up minimal space whilst maintaining exceptional power handling.

Following Pioneer’s OPEN & SMOOTH sound concept, the D series of automotive loud speakers provides broad and balanced frequency response with a wide sound stage and amazing fidelity for the listener.
26mm Polyester Soft Dome Tweeter Contoured from lightweight, resin-impregnated fibers of coated polyester fabric, the D tweeter delivers extended high-frequency performance. The 26mm diaphragm is very resistant to the harsh environmental conditions of the automotive interior (temperature, humidity, vibration, etc.), while maintaining its uniform hemispherical shape to reduce dome breakup due to excessive vibration at ultrasonic frequencies. The result is extremely low distortion levels and a smooth, natural sound.
Aramid Fiber Interlaced Injection Molded Polypropylene (IMPP) Polypropylene (PP) is a tough thermoplastic resin, ideal material for a speaker cone. The low mass and high damping of a PP cone generate good sensitivity and low distortion. However, polypropylene cones lack the rigidity and strength required for high output and extreme low bass. To resolve this, Pioneer engineers used advanced Computer-Aided Manufacturing to develop a process to blend aramid fibers into the polypropylene resin during the injection molding process. The resulting aramid fiber interlaced IMPP cone is ultra-thin and low mass with high rigidity and superior strength, built to produce natural, detailed sound with deep and powerful bass.

TMD Suspension The new K2 Power TKM tweeter features an exclusive “M”-shaped structure. This new-generation aramid-fibre inverted dome tweeter provides great precision in the very high end, and its combination with a “push-pull” motor with IAL2 technology extends the low end of the frequency response and provides extraordinary harmonic balance
“Radial VC” cooling For Higher SPL The new Radial VC cooling system for speaker driver voice coils expels hot air from the voice coil towards the bottom of the magnet through 6 holes. This improves control over the voice coil temperature, limiting the effects of thermal compression and improving reliability. This significantly increases the efficiency of the speaker driver. It also improves dynamics and produces a more powerful sound.
Progressive spider profile The progressive spider profile of K2 Power speaker drivers is designed to provide a full-bodied sound at low levels and to increase linearity, precision and dynamic range
An Optimised Crossover for Improved Reliability The components used for the new K2 Power crossovers were selected specifically and optimised in order to improve control over the effects of heat dissipation. These components, which are fundamental to managing the various channels and for the soundstage, are now even more reliable.
