Protection Film (PPF)

Washington & Colorado · Updated by the Car Toys install team

Quick answer: Paint protection film is a clear, self-healing urethane layer that stops rock chips, scratches, bug acid and road salt from reaching your paint. It lasts 5 to 10+ years, keeps factory paint like new and protects resale value. At Car Toys, PPF starts at $10 per door, a Full Front Kit is $1,650, and a Full Car starts at $4,750, installed.

Pacific Northwest gravel, Colorado mountain passes and sanded winter roads are hard on paint. PPF takes the hit so your car doesn't. Choose the coverage area you need, then pick self-healing Pro Tint PPF in gloss or matte.

Why PPF

6 benefits of paint protection film

PPF is the only clear protection that physically stops chips and scratches. Here is what it does for your vehicle.

1

Stops rock chips

Thick thermoplastic urethane film absorbs impacts from gravel and road debris that would chip paint on the front end.

2

Self-heals light scratches

Swirls and fine scratches disappear with heat from the sun or warm water, so the finish stays smooth.

3

Resists stains and etching

Helps guard against bug acid, bird droppings, tree sap, road salt and de-icer that etch clear coat.

4

Nearly invisible

High-clarity gloss film keeps your factory color and shine. Matte Pro Tint PPF is also available.

5

Protects resale value

Original, chip-free paint is one of the first things buyers and dealers look at on a trade-in.

6

Lasts for years

Quality PPF typically lasts 5 to 10+ years, far longer than wax, sealants or most ceramic coatings.

FAQ

Paint protection film questions

What is paint protection film (PPF)?

Paint protection film, also called clear bra, is a clear, flexible thermoplastic urethane film that is applied over your car's painted surfaces. It is typically 6 to 8 mil thick and absorbs rock chips, scratches and road debris before they reach the paint.

Is PPF worth it?

For most drivers in Washington and Colorado, yes. Gravel, sanded winter roads, mountain passes and highway commutes chip paint fast. Fixing chips or repainting a bumper or hood usually costs more than protecting it, and clean original paint helps resale value.

How much does PPF cost at Car Toys?

Car Toys PPF packages start at $10 per door for door cups and door edges. A Partial Front Kit is $849.99, a Full Front Kit is $1,650, and a Full Car starts at $4,750 for Tesla models, $5,500 for other cars and $6,500 for trucks and SUVs, all installed. Trucks, SUVs and matte film can cost more, and parts charge is calculated at the store level.

How long does paint protection film last?

Quality PPF typically lasts 5 to 10 years or more with proper care. For best results at install, we need your vehicle for 48 hours so the film can be fitted and set properly.

Does PPF really self-heal?

Yes. The top coat on modern films like Pro Tint PPF lets light swirls and fine scratches disappear with heat from the sun, warm water or the engine. Deep gouges that cut through the film will not heal.

PPF vs. ceramic coating: which is better?

They do different jobs. PPF is a physical layer that stops rock chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a thin chemical layer that adds gloss and makes washing easier, but it does not stop rock chips and usually lasts about 1 to 4 years. Many owners put PPF on the front end and ceramic coating over the whole car.

Which areas of my car should I protect?

Start with the high-impact areas: the front bumper, the leading edge of the hood and fenders, the mirrors and the headlights. A Full Front Kit covers all of those. Add rocker panels if you drive on gravel or snowy roads, door cups and edges for daily wear, and a trunk guard if you load a lot of gear.

Can PPF be removed?

Yes. Professionally installed PPF can be removed without harming healthy factory paint. Fresh body-shop paint should cure about 30 days before film is applied.

How do I care for my car after PPF installation?

Wait about a week before washing so the film can fully set. After that, hand wash with a pH-neutral soap, keep pressure washers at least 12 inches away from film edges, and avoid harsh solvents or abrasive polishes.

Can I get PPF and window tint at the same time?

Yes. Car Toys installs paint protection film, window tint and ceramic coating, so you can book them together at the same visit.

Can PPF go on plastic parts?

No. Paint protection film is made for painted surfaces only. Unpainted or textured plastic parts, such as black plastic trim, grilles and lower bumper pieces, cannot be paint protected.

What are the aftercare instructions for PPF?

For the first 7 days, do not wash the car, and do not pick at or lift any film edges. Small water bubbles or haze are normal and clear on their own as the film cures. After the first week, hand wash with a pH-neutral car soap and a soft microfiber mitt, keep pressure washers at least 12 inches from film edges, skip abrasive polishes, compounds and harsh solvents, and remove bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap promptly.
