Washington Distracted Driving Law

Washington Residents
Distracted Driving Law
Effective July 23, 2017 Washington State will enact a law that limits the use of cell phone, tablet, two-way messaging device or electronic game while operating a motor vehicle on the road (even while stopped). It will be against the law to hold or operate a phone while driving.

Have you ever done any of these while driving?
✔ Accessed your music
✔ Checked messages
✔ Checked Social Media
✔ Searched for a phone number
✔ Entered a location
✔ Checked traffic
✔ Reviewed your calendar
✔ Checked voice-mail
✔ Held your phone while driving - even with speakerphone
The Risk
- $136 Standard Traffic Fine for 1st Offense
- $235 fine for 2nd Offense
- Insurance companies will be notified
What if it is an emergency?
One of the few exceptions is to contact emergency services. Otherwise, you are to have your wireless device secured in a phone mount or otherwise out of your hands. Even in a cell phone mount the only allowed use is the (5)(c)(ii) “minimal use of a finger to activate, deactivate, or initiate a function of the device.” This law means no more holding your phone away from your ear on speakerphone or texting your friend that you’re running late (even at a red light). Fortunately, Car Toys can help.

Combining a Bluetooth Hands-free Car Kit with a universal cell phone mount can be an excellent option if you are looking to avoid an expensive ticket under Washington’s new distracted driving law.
Phone Mount
The universal cell phone mount will give you the ability to activate a function of your device and use whatever features are allowed by law, which if you are in Washington State is very limited. This is a good option for people who would like to follow the phone's built-in GPS or activate other essential device features.

Bluetooth Hands-free
A Bluetooth hands-free car kit is an excellent choice for connecting your wireless device to your factory stereo. This will allow you to make and receive phone calls, and in many cases streaming audio for music. Be careful though; some of these Bluetooth units may require that you control these features through your phone.

Apple CarPlay / Android Auto Receivers
Apple CarPlay / Android Auto Receivers
Depending on your particular needs Apple CarPlay or Android Auto aftermarket receivers might be the best option for you. If you are looking to add a mix of great features and safety, you should consider one of these units. CarPlay-enabled receivers, through Siri, allow you to control many of the features of your Apple iPhone such as music, maps, messaging, and phone calls. Similarly, Android Auto has a very robust voice-command feature powered by Google. Just say “OK Google” or press and hold the voice command button on your steering wheel, or touch-screen interface to activate voice commands. Just like CarPlay-enabled receivers you can make and receive phone calls, access your messages, get turn-by-turn directions, and much more!
